I’ve been a fan of Brene Brown since her December 2010 Ted Talk The Power of Vulnerability Why? Because this woman speaks the language of my heart! She gets it. Brene is one of the inspirations that drives me towards meaningful success because I think the opposite of meaningful is being fake. If you’re being fake you’re not being vulnerable and what a waste of a life! I’m not talking about the fake it til you make it kind of fake. I mean the fake where you aren’t being true to your soul-- authentic. Dare to Lead takes this idea of “wholehearted living” into the business world.
Two things I use all the time since reading the book:
People, People, People
When I have full-on Impostors Syndrome, my senior coworkers and leaders become these untouchable legends that I must impress and perform for perfectly. I might even behave in a way that is not true to myself to please. Brene’s advice is to remember they are just People. They are fallible humans just like me. It helps.
BRAVING
Boundaries- Reliability- Accountability- Vault- Integrity- Non Judgment- Generosity. These are keys to trust. I think of myself as a trustworthy person. I’m highly accountable, operate with integrity, try not to judge and I’m working on boundaries. Something I have to really, really work on is Vault issues. Trust is the cornerstone to great relationships whether personal relationships or professional relationships. Vault issues has caused me problems in both areas of my life. Dare to Lead definitely has great information to help you in the trust department.
Brene’s authenticity is refreshing and I always feel like I’ve just been talking with a dear, close friend when reading her books. Personally I love the audiobook because Brene herself reads it and I feel even more like we are BFFs. Dare to Lead hands down makes my Recommended Reading list.
Another reason to read the book is the Ham Foldover Incident. (Brene, GURL! I’ve been there!)
