When’s the last time you read the newspaper? I mean legitimately, picked up a printed
newspaper and read it. According to Pew Research Center, the number of print readers is declining significantly-- it’s about 10% fewer readers year-over-year. It’s no surprise that most people get their news online and two-thirds of people get their news from scrolling through their social media feeds. The way we get our news has changed but should we keep up with the news. Some think that it’s pointless, stressful, and stifles creativity. However, I believe the good outweighs the bad and there are many benefits to reading the news daily. The Art of Manliness (not just for men, ladies!) has a great article explaining the reasons why to read the news. Go check that out and I’m going to talk about the best ways to get your fill of the news and not feel like a grandpa!
How To Get the News
The first step is to find out how you like to get your news. Are you a twitter fan? Do you live in your inbox? The options for consumption are endless. I won’t judge if you like to read a printed newspaper, either.
Avoiding Fake News
Whichever side you sit on, fake news is a real issue. As the saying goes, “don’t believe everything you hear.” and take the time to research questionable news. What makes news questionable? Sensational Stigmatized, Stupifying.

Benefits to Reading the News
In my personal opinion, I think it’s important to stay aware of current events because they indicate changes in society. What seems like a small news story about a law being passed in a different state may not be obviously relevant to you, for example. But what happens in one state can happen in others. It’s important to be educated and the news helps you do that. And most of all, it’s beneficial to read the news because it gives you something to talk about with others “have you heard about the price of steel lately?”. So read the news! However you choose to, just do it.
