A while back I asked my mentor if it’s ever ok to coast in your career. I was just about to have my first child and I felt overwhelmed by the thought of taking on more responsibility at work. Not that I was being offered but… I like to be prepared and “keep my eye on the prize” in life. So that’s why I asked the “what if” question. What if I just coasted in my career until my babies are older, is it ok to coast? Her answer: No but it’s ok to hold at a level of responsibility as long as you are developing yourself.
What does this mean for me? I’m going to go back to school because that is something I can work into my schedule and go at my own pace. Compared to the ever increasing demands of a higher leadership position, pursuing additional education is more sustainable.
What does holding mean for others? The answer is another question. How do you develop yourself? Maybe it’s reading or attending a conference. Maybe it’s identifying a growth area and working to improve. Holding can mean honing your skill set. Holding can mean diversifying your skill set. Continue to grow! As my Zumba instructor said “You’re either Green and Growing or Brown and going down”.
Avoid coasting. Don’t start slacking because you are a parent now. This is an opportunity to be pushed and stretched to understand your capabilities and resourcefulness.
